While I don’t personally watch too much TV (as everybody knows, I pretty much only watch MST3K, Supernatural, Sherlock, and Deep Space Nine), I know a whole lot of people do. Come forward here and talk about your favorite TV shows.

I never watch TV unless new episodes come out for Archer and some [adult swim] shows. If I watch a movie on my comp, it's a Rifftrax. I also watch MST3Ks on Youtube. I *should* just drop my TV service completely, but it's all tangled up in a phone and internet bundle.

Yeah, I wind up going online for my movie fix (mainly because my brain's trapped in the 70s-80s). If I can't find any noir or some interesting vintage flicks that I used to enjoy when I was younger, I often have to hit youtube.

I got a Netflix account sometime in November of 2011, and suddenly I started watching a bunch of television even though it didn't interest me much beforehand. I basically got a Netflix account to watch Parks and Recreation. I also started following Dr. Who, Supernatural, BBC!Sherlock, and Lost Girl. Other shows I like are Arrested Development, Archer, Sons of Anarchy, and Burn Notice.

Hey, has anyone here seen or heard of Fringe? Is it any good? I watched a few episodes and it seemed really interesting.

My friend loved it and I ended up watching the second season with her, which I enjoyed even without knowing the first. Eventually I borrowed the first season and enjoyed that too. It's definitely worth watching at least the first couple seasons for the characters, but I know it gets really crazy and complex, so...yeah I have no idea :)

My Netflix account keeps telling me to watch Merlin.
What says the Diet of Sporks? Endorsements? Opinions? Drinking games?

(Obviously I snapped up kroki_refur's fanfics as fast as I could, and they're better-written than most genre TV, so the real question is "Is it 'CW-type bad,' which is dead boring, or is it 'SyFy original' 'puke-your-guts-out hilarious' bad?")

I watched all five series, yet I find myself at a loss for how to describe it.

The first two and a half series were 'we're-aiming-this-at-kids' bad. Monster of the Week, Status Quo is God, and don't expect any historical accuracy whatsoever if you know what's good for you. I personally treated it as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV show and found that it was just fine for one of those. None of the actors were terrible (Anthony Head and Richard Wilson are never terrible), but it suffered from not really having much of a plot.

Halfway through series three, something actually changed (!!!) and it suddenly started getting genuinely good, with character development and plot arcs and all that cool stuff. It continued that way until the finale...

...about which the less said, the better.

Merlin is a weird show to analyse. The tone shift from the early show to the late show needed another couple of years to really take root, and it shows in the rushed finale. They also used up some really big plot elements (like the Lady in the Lake) very early on before the plot arcs started to work properly, so the plot gets a bit... skewed at times.

Also, characters are frequently idiots. See 'live-action D&D', above.

I'd recommend it, but it's difficult to explain why. I think it's probably much, much more entertaining if you're a tabletop gamer, but the later series were frequently excellent - and the early episodes aren't exactly bad, just very, very different tonally from what the show would later become.

The only show I'm currently obsessed with at the moment is Once Upon A Time, and I normally don't even watch new episodes until they're on ABC's site the next day. Part of this is because my TV is strictly for watching DVDs, and also because I hate commercials.

But I'm a huge MSTie.

What's OUaT like? I know a lot of people who love it, but I've also heard that it's seriously problematic; a number of people have mentioned Mr. Gold and the whole business of Emma and Henry.

Does Japanese TV count?
I don't have cable in my room yet (getting that fixed this weekend) but for the past year I've been keeping up with Smile Pretty Cure online. The Pretty Cure franchise is a (merch-driven, but who's complaining?) anime series that gets a new continuity every year or so, and the ninth/current one, Smile, is ending this month--three episodes left.
I love this show--I just love animation, magical girls, the Cures all fight with awesomeness, punching and kicking their enemies instead of spamming magic blasts, the characters are fun, and sure it gets silly at times but that's what happens when the show is aimed at grade-schoolers.
Also, one of the villains, Joker (guy in my icon) is awesome when he actually shows up.

I'm currently watching two TV shows at the moment. XD Once Upon A Time and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Once Upon A Time is a very fun and interesting show, I like the spin they took on the fairy tale world and the characters presented, I love the callbacks to the Disney versions (I'm a sucker for them), and it's all just very fun.

MLP, what can I say, I just love it. :D

I don't watch too much TV myself, and any other show I watch at the moment has already either ended or was canceled.

1. Favorite Joel-Era episode?

Of the ones I've seen (which don't include The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, sadly), it's a tie between I Accuse My Parents and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

2. Favorite Mike-Era episode(both Comedy Central and SyFy)

Jack Frost (called Morozko, originally). That's my favorite MST3K episode. Puma Man, The Touch of Satan and Devil Doll are close seconds.

3. Favorite 'Bot?

Crow T. Robot.

4. Favorite Riffs? (Try to limit to seven)

a) "Ah, the classic battle between evil and the narrator."
b) "The Royal Lippizaner Pigs!"
c) (In response to a short entitled "A Date With Your Family") "Hey, I like my family as a friend!"
d) (singing to the tune of "Amazing Grace") "This song i-i-is in/ the public domain/ that's why-y-y we used it twice."
e) "Heeelp! I'm falling at a sixty degree angle breaking all the laws of physics!"
f) "DO SOMETHING!!!"
g) "Believe in magic...or I'll kill you."

5. Movie You Wish They Did?

a) Them!
b) Heaven's Gate (it was once the most expensive flop ever filmed; it may still be)

6. Favorite Songs? (In theater or Host Segments)

HE TRIED TO KILL ME WITH A FORKLIFT!
Merry Christmas, If That's Okay
Patrick Swayze Christmas
Where, Oh Werewolf?
The Finale of Werewolf
Puma Man

7. The Mads or Pearl/Bobo/Observer?

They're both good, but I prefer Pearl, Bobo and Brain Guy because I saw more episodes with them.

Something worse than Twilight

(Link)
So, what in your opinion is worse than the most infamous books series of all time?

For me, it is undoubtedly New Degrassi, aka Degrasshit. New Degrassi is so much worse than Twilight it's pathetic. It really started with its seasonal rot in season 9, but there were still a few episodes I liked. But with season 10, there was not a single episode that I didn't hate. Pay no attention to any inbred moron who says it was the Degrassi Renaissance. By the time the season reached it's halfway point, just about everything about it left me wanting to tear my hair out. Think Mervin's rage towards New Moon. And despite how much of an abomination season 10 was, season 11 was so much worse. I had low expectations for season 11, but it still managed to be far worse than even I predicted. The sociopath named Drew (or Drouche, due to his Jersey Shore-like douchiness) had his character derailed and reached Black Hole Sue levels, and was almost single-handedly responsible for why season 11 was even worse than season 10, as he appeared in almost every single episode. As for my favorite character's treatment, a little part of me died whenever that happened, and I'm not exaggerating whenever I say that.

Also, the acting is worse than Twilight. Kristen Stewart can out act several of them, even ones (or maybe even especially) ones who get the most screen time. The actor who plays Drouche is the worse actor I've ever laid eyes on. I'd rather have that guy in Troll 2 act in a show than him.

As for the fandom, well, they're even worse than the Twitards if you ask me. Their stupidity isn't really on the level of the Twitards, but the thing that makes them worse in my eyes is that they're far more vicious, blind to the series' faults, and more like their sociopathic favorite characters than even the Twitards. I'm not proud of it, but I actually put up with the fandom for half a year, and they (along with the show itself, since the aforementioned favorite character used to be one of my coping mechanisms) successfully exacerbated my PTSD without even trying. Just a bunch of vicious, rabid dogs. While some of this is predictable due to the fact that at least 60% of them are a bunch of middle schoolers and high schoolers, I haven't even seen Twitards in that age bracket show that level of bullying disregard for other people's feelings and unbelievable self-centerdness.

Then there's the attitudes of the show's creators. The HBICs have reached truly SMeyer levels of wanking over their precious Sues. However, at least SMeyer has never said anything to intentionally provoke her fans and make them feel like shit. Unfortunately I didn't save the Tweet, but it's clear that the HBICs are outright verbally bullying part of their fandom. When asked how they could possibly have Riley and Zane break up after everything they went through, Stohn said something like

We love to torture ;)."

You little motherfucker. If I ever meet you I will stab you in the face. How dare you say that to your fans after everything you already put them through. I was hit harder probably more than anyone else. Even though Zane is a fe**h and doesn't deserve Riley, a part of me died inside whenever that happen. I hate these people. I seriously considered learning Goetia to try and get revenge on these ass wipes, and I don't even believe in magic and woo-woo.

Opinions On Sam Not Even Attempting to Find Dean When He Was In Purgatory? (Mervin Especially)

(Link)
"Just look at all the times Sam and Dean Winchester accidentally or on-purpose betray each other—what does the other one invariably do? It always results in a fight, and often they are physical. They do punch each other, and then they call the other one out on it."

I know that this storyline was forever ago, but I'd like to talk about it if you don't mind.

I'm still pissed off at Sam for not even trying to save his brother, after all the sacrifices he made for him. I know Sam has helped Dean out numerous times before, and it just seems so out of character that he didn't even attempt to research anything when Dean and Cas went missing into Purgatory. His excuses are all bullshit to me. Dean would have moved heaven and earth to find Sam if the tables were turned, and Sam knows that.

I just can't believe Sam just went on with his life without even trying first. Because Bobby wasn't there to help him with the research? Because it was too hard, so he just gave up? He said that he was alone, he didn't have anyone, he didn't know what to do...you'd think that'd be motivation to try to find the only family he has left, since Bobby's gone! And when Dean called him out on it, he just seemed so nonchalant, like, "Whatever, it's done." He could at least have acted like he gave a fuck. And to stop hunting? Seriously? There was a time when Sam would have felt guilty as hell if people died because he stopped hunting. I know there are other hunters out there (as he so coldly pointed out) but still. What the hell, Sam?

Basically, Sam threw Dean and Cas out to the woods to hang out with some chick and a damn dog. And he doesn't even seem to care. I finished the latest season a while ago, and through the end, it just didn't seem like he realized how wrong he was for that. I don't understand! I know Dean was living a fantasy life with Ben and Lisa for a while too, but my God, at least he came to his senses!

Mervin, I wanted to ask your opinion on this especially, because I know you're a Sam girl and I love hearing what you have to say about pretty much anything. Personally I feel like Sam used to be the more openly sensitive, compassionate one, but it seems that he and Dean have somewhat switched roles, and Dean's the softer one now. It's character development, yes, but it makes me not like Sam that much anymore. What he did (or rather, didn't do) to Dean and Cas is something Souless!Sam would do. Not the thoughtful, selfless, kindhearted Sam we know and love.

With that said: Mervin and other Sam Girls (or SP fans in general!) What do you think about this?

Re: Opinions On Sam Not Even Attempting to Find Dean When He Was In Purgatory? (Mervin Especially)

(Link)
In my opinion, Sam's whole relationship with Amelia seemed really weird. I think I read something about how it would have made more sense if it was actually a hallucination on Sam's part-- a literal dream world that had to disappear eventually. It doesn't really seem like him at all to just give up hunting and not bother to search for Dean just because he met a chick (and what kind of vet manipulates an unprepared person into adopting a pet?).

Right now I feel like Sam needs to "redeem" himself somehow for that, especially considering what Dean would do in the same situation.

Okane Ga Nai and other shitty yaois

(Link)
So I've sporked a couple of crappy New Degrassi fics that tainted Harry Potter with Degrasshit. I think I'm going to take a break from that because I've been wanting to spork some shitty yaoi (which is kind of redundant, Imo) for a while now.

First off I'm going to spork the shitstopper, Okane Ga Nai. This animanga feels me with a murderous, fiery rage that rivals my hatred for New Degrassi and I consider it the Fifty Shades of anime. Anyone interested in seeing a sporking for this?

Something Supernatural actually has in common with Twilight

(Link)
OK. I know there are quite a few Supernatural fans on here, and I'm probably not going to be very popular with you about this, but I'd just like to get it off my chest.

"When it comes to killing people, whether or not you know them is very, very important. That’s what helped give her the strength to run—not that murdering anybody is wrong, but because there was a possibility that they might’ve been people she knows, and that’s what really matters here...By Meyer’s logic here—by Bella saying that refraining from murder only matters if it might be someone you know"

Hasn't anyone noticed that when it comes to possessed people, the Winchesters have the exact same viewpoint? They only care if it's someone they know. Actually, maybe they don't even care about that, considering Dean nearly killed Kevin's mother. Anyone else, they're only too happy to stick a knife in or slit their throat.

If Meyer's vampires killing people and drinking their blood is murder, then so is the Winchesters' killing people who are possessed by demons/angels. Just as Twilight fans don't seem to realize that vampires would drink THEIR blood if they got the chance, Supernatural fans don't seem to get that if they were possessed, the Winchesters would very happily kill them.

It's been awhile since I've watched Supernatural, but unless it's really changed, the key difference is that Supernatural doesn't present the Winchesters as unerringly right. They're trying to do the right thing, but they often fall short.

True Blood and their minorities problem

(Link)
Anyone else watch this show? And if so is anyone else annoyed that they compare vampires to actual persecuted minorities like gay people, Jews, and black people? I thought they wisely dropped that shitty metaphor, but the newest season brought it back to the forefront. Whenever they started going on about how people who hate vampires are racist and compare it to the Holocaust, this was basically my reaction.

WUT look
Shocked cat
224135_original

Oh you have GOT to be fucking KIDDING me. If anyone is even slightly familiar with how the vampires act, you can see why this is a load of shit. I was honestly rooting for Antonia to wipe out every single last one of them, Dresden vs. the Red Court style, the vampires are so horrible.

Re: True Blood and their minorities problem

I know what you mean. I want to yell at the authors "Gay/Black/Jews don't drink blood from humans!" And I don't even watch the show, so I don't even know what they do. Still, there's no comparison between a member of a minority, who isn't inherently dangerous, and a vampire, who survives by drinking blood. Humans are always going to be wary towards someone who is a predator.

Hope I can keep that in mind when I write my series.

Burned out on Lost Girl (Warning: Rant)

(Link)
Is anyone else starting to get pissed about Lost Girl? Because, after going into Season 4 with high hopes, I now can't muster any enthusiasm for the show.

Mainly, there are a lot of new elements introduced that should be addressed but end up glossed over or completely forgotten. Bo is now Dark? She can still screw Dyson without breaking Fae laws and everyone still acts like she's unaligned. Trick is the acting Ash? We never see him doing anything regarding that or anyone treating him differently. Dyson promising to train Kenzi as a Shadow thief? Forget that; let's give Bo a new love interest (I don't care how hot he is; he could be played by Jake Gyllenhaal and I still would be pissed)! Also, on that note, let's ignore how she's supposed to be defiant and making her own path and be all "he's my destiny!"

And, from what I read up, even the Kenzi/Hale romance isn't going to last long. God, even Bleach didn't fuck up this badly; at least there's still some cool battles and interesting character development outside the protagonist. And I've still pretty much given up on that.

I'm sorry if I'm dumping this all on everyone, but I just needed to get out all this.

Any thoughts on the How I Met Your Mother finale? (Warning: spoilers)

(Link)
Personally, I found it...polarizing. There were a lot of things I didn't like, namely [spoiler]Barney and Robin's sudden divorce, after spending an entire season building up and showcasing their relationship. It just seemed like a cheap way to get the Official Couple together and, to me, made most of the story completely pointless. While there were some small moments I did enjoy, I felt like most of the character development that the group went through was just chucked out of the window in favor of a dramatic, bittersweet ending. My older brother who is also a fan of the show enjoyed it. I was just left feeling unsatisfied. To me, most of the major conflict and reveals were just forced and unnatural.

Re: Any thoughts on the How I Met Your Mother finale? (Warning: spoilers)

(Link)
You summed up my thoughts pretty well. I liked the finale for the most part, but we spent an entire season on that wedding, and it was gone in two scenes. Robin even pretty much calls the entire season a huge mistake.
Having future!Ted end up with future!Robin does make sense. As his son points out, this entire story has ultimately been about him and Robin. And with that in mind, Barney and Robin need to break up, but they could have drawn that out instead of Robin falling away from the group.
Just off the top of my head, here's a small tweak that would have made things much better, IMO.
Barney and Robin are married. Robin's job takes her out of the country for large portions of time, but Barney goes with her. He gets to see exciting new places, meet exciting new people. He's happy. She's happy.
Cut to the apartment-leaving party. Still married. Barney's there, but Robin's on assignment. Barney comments that as much fun as he's having touring the world with Robin, he misses being able to hang out with Ted, Marshall, and Lily.
Cut to more scenes over the years. Barney is staying back from Robin's trips more and more often. Robin starts getting jealous that Barney prefers to stay in New York with the guys than be with her. On their tenth anniverary, they decide to get divorced.
I think that would be a lot more satisfying, because we'd see they had a good marriage that slowly fell. Rather than one that, as far as we saw, started to unravel almost immediately, and only lasted three years.

Another 'Supernatural' thing

(Link)
Am I the only person who was absolutely disgusted with the treatment of Dr and Mrs Weiss in 'Meet The New Boss'? No, really - from what I've seen on YouTube comments, people think that an innocent couple who have been tied up, watching something they can't possibly understand and are quite possibly traumatised/terrified is FUNNY.

I thought the Winchesters only told people about the supernatural when they had no other choice. Their treatment of the Weisses seemed really out of character. Dean could have just got the gun, grabbed the crystal and run off. Tying them up like that was completely unnecessary. They probably didn't even apologise or let them go afterwards. And during the ritual, it was like the Weisses weren't even there or were part of the furniture.

OK, rant over.

Mortal Instruments is superior to Twilight in only two respects: it acknowledges gay people exist, and it has a romance that doesn't make me want to tear my eyes out through my mouth.
