The Chatterbox: Das Sporking
As the community owner and mod, I am always looking for ways to improve the comm. As such, this is where you can talk about the comm itself—do you have suggestions? Compliments? Criticisms? Ideas for a new Chatterbox subject? Or even just want to say how you found this place or places you’ve seen the comm linked? You can bring it here and mention it.
Do you have a Twitter account where you announce each new sporking? (Or each new chapter of FSOG, since that would be the biggest draw.)
There was one, but I don't think it's been in use as of late.
I found this place in a very odd, roundabout way. Before TV Tropes permanently deleted their So Bad it's Horrible Fanfic page, I used to browse it. Well, one day, I clicked on the link for Hogwarts Exposed and in the 'Awesome' tab was a link to the spite-fics written here. I read them, giggling insanely, then started trawling the comm for other sporks.
I actually joined when Gehayi and Ket began sporking Fifty Shades.

Awww, thank you! I'm flattered. Glad you're here--it's an excellent comm.
It might be useful to have a link to the chatterboxes in the sidebar, or they'll become buried over time.
A "Chatterbox Forum" link has been added, and it leads to the .chatterbox tag and has them all listed. Thanks for the suggestion!
Lemme try and remember. I found a Tokyo Mew Mew spork. by chance on deviantart around two years ago. I fell in love with it right away and started feverently searching for more. I found some more Tokyo Mew Mew sporks on someone's freewebs website and read those.
Then, I hit a dead end for around a month. I couldn't find any website that hosted sporks (mostly from not knowing where to look, I didn't know about LiveJournal back then).
And then, I found Overlord Mikey's page on LJ on day and quickly jumped on his Haruhi Suzumiya sporking. All was good.
Until I finished it. Starved, and craving more snark, I saw his link to Zelda Queen, and then saw her link to this comm after a while.
And that is my semi-dramatized story of how I became a sporker.
Back when TV Tropes still had a page for the Rose Potter fics, I followed the link to Mervin's sporkings and read the whole thing. I thought they were completely hilarious, and became obsessed with looking into people tearing Rose a new one. During my search, I stumbled across Mervin's own journal. From there, I read her Twilight recaps and really loved them.
When the revamped sporkings were being posted here, I followed. ^_^

Um, I just wanted to say that the banner on the new sticky post stretches the page out quite a bit on my 1024x768 screen. Here's a picture
, you can see it affects all the posts. It's not a huge deal, but it would be really nice if you could make the banner a bit smaller.
Sorry the first comment I ever post here is a complaint! I'm just a little lurker who loves your Twilight sporkings.

Thanks to this Comm
I'm pretty confident that my OCs are NOT Sues. ;)
Strangely, one of my OCs is named Arianna(and yes, her nickname is Ari), but she could not be more different from Ariana Black if she tried. For one, I didn't know Ariana existed when I named her-I just thought the name sounded nice.
I wrote a character once that on the surface, has all the marks of a Sue. She's a demigoddess(her father is Helios), is very beautiful, has all sorts of powers(I think at one point she was telekinetic, pyrokinetic, telepathic, had an IQ in the stratosphere, was a polyglot, and could stop time. In my defense, I first thought her up when I was 16), and has angst in the form of being on the run from an Evil and Corrupt Government that had been using her as part of an Evil Secret Project. Oh, and it took place in the Far Future, and mankind has colonized the stars and made contact with aliens. And yes, gods too...
Recently, I found my notebook with her story in it, and I realized..."Wow, she's...actually not as bad as I thought." I'd toned down her powers(telekinesis and pyrokinesis), made her smart but not a genius, kept her ability to learn languages, but made it so it wasn't instantaneous. She's still on the run, but she's fighting back.

Re: Thanks to this Comm
Seems like you were the sensible type of a teenager writer! Are you doing anything with that character now, like incorporating her into the Wolf's Bane universe or what?
My own characters tend to slide into Sueness during development. For example, two of my most recent creations: East, a badass demon hunter who can speak three languages fluently, trades on the black market, sleeps on the streets, has a tragic past and doesn't trust anyone.
On the other hand, she's universally hated by the rest of the characters, she's a stone-cold bitch and most of the novel is spent developing her until she develops some goddamn empathy. She also has zero special powers.
The other, Mori, is your stereotypical Normal Teenage PR Heroine but the fct that she's a conartist, a kleptomaniac, she hates the misogynistic lead guy with a fiery passion of a thousand suns and she is the only completely normal human on the team.

What about a chat-room?
I found this site through Goodreads. A twifan had posted a "why do people think the Twilight books are bad" type of discussion, and in response, someone linked to the spork of Twilight. I followed the link, read that spork as well as the ones for New Moon and Eclipse, and I've been hooked ever since.
I found the comm by- I found tv tropes, one of the pages had a link to pottersues, from there I think I found zelda queen and loved it and via the zq Child of Grace sporking found this one...
Hi, Mervin. It's bothered me for a while that the links on this comm appear in a very dark purple that I find difficult to distinguish from black. Consequently, when people post [a href]s, I don't always realise. If it was up to me I'd use a different colour for hyperlinks, but then, if no-one else is bothered it may just be my monitor settings.
I have brightened them up a bit. Better?
So when you spork fanfics, do you just spork the bad ones or do you spork the mediocre ones too?
It all depends. I generally avoid "simply mediocre", because that's not really a source of entertainment if the whole thing is just "blah" with nothing truly bad or enraging or even a good source of hilarity. However, I very much prefer that the fics I spork have fairly good writing mechanics, because if it's just one huge jumbled mess that would make "My Immortal" proud, then it simply sporks itself and is a lot harder to read.
I can't really remember how I found this comm. I was a member of deleterius for ages; when it imploded, I came here, along with a few others.
The Timetraveler's Wife
I was just wondering if any of the sporkers here have ever had an interest in sporking The Timetraveler's Wife? I'd give it a go if it wasn't so easy for me to loose interest in long lasting projects. I ones tried to review The Host chapter by chapter and it didn't work out that well.
Re: The Timetraveler's Wife
Has anyone here ever dreamed about das_sporking before?
I dreamed that Mervin was my teacher -- she was going to teach me how to spork. I was sat at my desk and everything, but then, just when she was about to begin, some guys in suits came. They talked to Mervin in private, and she revealed to me afterwards that they owned a big review website and they wanted to hire her as an official reviewer. The only thing is, she's only allowed to review things that their genres pertain to, and due to copyright issues, she wouldn't be allowed to spork Twilight anymore. I was devastated, and I begged her not to take the job -- however, she was unsure whether or not she wanted to take it, because they were going to pay her a lot of money.....
But that wasn't the weirdest part.
The weirdest part was, because I don't actually know what Mervin looks like, my brain just threw in Castiel as a stand-in. So, this whole time, Mervin was actually Castiel.
I know what you mean about the Mervin stand-in.
I had a dream that I was on vacation and Mervin was with me. We were extras for a movie which seemed to be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, only Bellatrix Lestrange (who was the one being filmed at that point) was played by a rat in a witch's outfit. Not a humanoid rat or anything, just an ordinary rat made to stand on its hind legs.
I was having a conversation with Mervin about the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. She was ranting about how incredibly sexist she thought the series was. I was shocked because not only was the Enchanted Forest Chronicles one of the least-sexist series I've read, but it struck me as the sort of thing she'd enjoy.
I never saw Mervin directly, though. She was always just out of my eyesight. I can't remember what her voice sounded like, either. I just somehow knew it was her.
i had a thought today. theres going to be a lot of famous badfics out there that deserve sporking, and the last thing this community needs is duplicates or accusations of 'stealing ideas'. like, if one person decides to spork a famous badfic, and another person gets there first, no one wants to deal with that fall-out. so would it be possible to create a place, even just a sub-thread, to 'reserve' famous bad fics for future sporkings? like, so i could reserve sonichu for future sporking opportunities. or would that be greedy?
I like this.
I'm working on a spork of Mr Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange, but I don't want to start posting until I have finished the spork in its entirety. It'd be nice to know that nobody else was going to snatch it up.
Question for Merv!
Would it be permissible to spork fic involving members of Channel Awesome(TGWTG)/Spoony Experiment? Because I've found some doozies in the Pit, and technically they're not Real Person Fic..
Just a minor thing; a little while ago, I finished the spork I was doing (The Elven Unicorn Lady) and PMed das_melvin with the link, alternative title and summary of a new Suefic I want to spork. It's been over a week now and I've heard nothing back. I don't really know what to do; I don't want to keep bugging melvin with constant messages, nor do I want to just post the spork and have it deleted. Can someone please help me on this?
I am here, I am here. I'm sorry--I've been MIA. My job has been eating my time and energy.
You are good to go on your new spork--I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. And Skyshatter, I haven't updated a lot of sporks, and I'm going to do that very soon as well; probably tonight. I have some updates I need to do.
Just wanted to ask this, as the fic I'm sporking might need them in later chapters, but I'm not really sure what merits a trigger warning. Could someone please give me a rough guide?

Re: Trigger Warnings
Generally, anything that might be traumatic. The big ones are:
- Rape, dubcon, noncon, or sexual coersion (say, one character manipulating another into kissing or sleeping with them or some such thing)
- Abusive relationships
- A character being violently attacked, especially coupled with the above two points
I was wondering if maybe there could be a place for co-sporker requests. There's a book I would like to spork but I'm not sure I could do it justice by myself, as I'm inexperienced with HTML and I'm intimidated by the fact that it's Real Literature and all. Maybe there could also be a topic where you can find someone just to fact-check your spork, even if it's just a chapter. What do you think about this?
Is there a way we could assist with updating the "Main Sporkings" and "Asides and One Shots" pages?
On that note, is there also a way to split published works from fanfiction?
I need to share this with people who will understand:
One of my profs keeps using the phrase "the balance of" to mean "the rest of"- like "for the balance of the class" or "I'll upload the balance of the slides."
And all I can think is: NEIL. *shivers*
I'm a little confused about the tags. Whenever I try to add new ones, they don't show up whenever I save them. Specifically, I'm trying to add "fandom: degrassi", and "fic: everyone has a secret right?", but they're not showing up.
Mods handle tags. Let them handle those.
this miiiiight be a bit of a controversial opinion, so feel free to ignore or whatever it is you do to the bad suggestions around here - but i feel like, with the recent opening of the doors, as it were, we are getting swamped by certain sporkers not sufficiently spacing their sporks out. like, people are burning through their sporks at a cheetah pace, putting one instalment out every day, and perhaps im just jealous of their ability to do that without writing projects getting in the way but when im more used to the once-a-week or once-in-a-while updates of regular sporkers like mervin and gehayi, this is a major paradigm shift. perhaps increasing the mandatory-waiting-period between posts from a day to a week would be beneficial, because then extra care could be taken to take into account any comments left on previous installments, and we always have a fair variety of sporkers on any given day.
